Steps of the Traditional Thai Khon Mak Procession
Steps of the Traditional Thai Khon Mak Procession
1. Organizing the Khon Mak Procession
The procession consists of the groom, family members, close friends, and bearers of the ceremonial trays (phaan), which are prepared according to Thai customs.
2. Preparing the Khon Mak Trays
The trays are divided into:
Primary trays (Phaan Khon Mak Aek): Containing betel nuts, the dowry tray, and the engagement ring tray.
Secondary trays (Phaan Khon Mak Tho): Including auspicious desserts, fruit, incense and candles, gifts for elders, and floral arrangements.
3. Starting the Procession
The procession begins with lively Thai music, such as a Pee Phat band or traditional drumming, creating a festive atmosphere. Songs called Bote Heh Khon Mak are sung to announce the procession's arrival and add joy to the event. Along the way, the group might pause for singing and playful activities.
4. Passing Through the Gold and Silver Gates
The groom must pass through gates set up by the brides family. To proceed, he offers money or gifts as a symbolic gesture.
5. Welcoming at the Brides Home
Upon arriving at the brides home, the groom and his family are warmly welcomed by the brides family. The brides relatives inspect the trays to ensure all ceremonial items are complete according to tradition.
6. Additional Ceremonies
This includes presenting the dowry, exchanging engagement rings, and tying holy threads around the couples wrists as a blessing.
The Khon Mak Chant (Bote Heh Khon Mak)
The Bote Heh Khon Mak is a joyous chant filled with auspicious and poetic verses. A sample chant might be:
Our trays of love are beautifully arranged,
A symbol of care from the groom so far away.
He brings his heart with devotion so true,
To honor this day and the love they renew.
The Khon Mak procession reflects love, respect, and unity between the families of the bride and groom. It creates a cheerful atmosphere and lasting memories for everyone involved in this special wedding day.
